Chief is a quite thoughtful and lonely stallion who grew up being resented by all except for his mother. He is a quick learner but does not boast about it and can get quite angry very quickly when offended or his loved ones are offended. Many riders describe him as a good ride and one without the unpredictable personality of the typical stallion. He has never met his father but has heart numerous times the story of his birth and how he came to be. He is at the bottom of the stallions, but he doesn't mind. As long as he stays away and does not make any moves suggesting he would want to climb the social ladder. He has two friends: a spirited young gelding by the name of Arapaho and an old wise stallion named Wrangler.
